I grew up being very active. I loved being outside, playing sports, and eventually lifting weights. When I got older I wanted to go into the physical therapy profession because I loved connecting with people and helping them get back to being healthy and strong. However, life had different plans. After college I was in a bad place in my life. I felt lonely, isolated, and I used food as a coping strategy to feel good. I gained weight and got up to 270+ lbs at my heaviest. I became determined to get myself together, find healthier coping strategies, and improve my life. It took time, consistency and effort but I was able to get my life back on track, reach my goal, and lose 100 lbs.
In 2015 I injured my back while back squatting in the gym. This became a turning point for me. My injury made me question why I was doing what I was doing…what was my why? I was lifting to lose weight, look good, and get stronger, in that order. But, I thought to myself what was the point of it all if I didnt move well, lacked the mobility and range of motion I needed in my day to day life and was prone to injury? I just wanted to look a certain way and get as strong as possible in the process. There is nothing wrong if this is your goal. I just think it can be done better.
However, In my humble opinion if you change your focus on better movement and mobility overall, then build strength on top of that aka laying the GROUNDWORK then you will remove the restrictions holding you back, get stronger, feel your best, and have the added bonus of looking better while doing it. It’s just not the focus. Overall health and movement quality is.
Chronic pain, injuries, and overall stiffness really makes you appreciate and value the ability to move well without limitations. These limitations consume you. They make you feel broken, run down, and fragile; which affects your quality of life, mood, and can limit what you can do with your body.
I never attended PT school. Instead, I studied to become a movement and strength coach and pursued continuing education and mentorships to learn everything I could about movement, the human body, biomechanics, therapy, rehab, and strength training so that I could better help my clients.
My passion is to help people live a life of physical freedom, doing the activities they enjoy, unhindered by limitations in mobility, strength, past injuries, and pain.
